Why Is Information technology And then Inexpensive?
PSA got so big because information technology created good products at crawly prices. And how did it do that?
Vertical integration. Everything after raw materials they practice it in-business firm.
That'south how they make complete prepare-to-shoot ARs for around $500…fifty-fifty with aftermarket furniture.
I've done a couple reviews of their stuff and everything has been reliable. Some coloring problems hither and there merely I can overlook it due to the price.

HOWEVER…AR-15 pistols are a dissimilar beast considering of their short gas systems. I've always had some trouble with my home-built versions and then I was very curious to see how PSA fabricated theirs reliable (or not).
But first…
Legality
Check your local and land laws earlier buying an AR-15 complete pistol or upper. Nosotros're not lawyers and this is non legal advice.
Some cases yous will need a specific Pistol lower…but for the nearly part y'all need a virgin lower that hasn't been congenital into a burglarize even so.
And if y'all don't take a suitable lower…it might exist illegal to have a sub-16″ upper.
Every bit for AR-15 braces…the current consensus from the ATF is that it's A-OK to shoulder. However, I'd still recommend confronting it since local departments might not be working off current knowledge.

Fit, Feel, & Cease
Everything looked fine with PSA standards.
The sometimes regal-ish hue I've received before was not in that location. Each handguard matched the blackness color of the upper receiver.
The ten.5″ and 7.five″ butt uppers had drastically different handguards. And I liked some elements from each.
In the 10.v″…I liked the overbuilt attachment system with iii screws, two detents, and alignment ears. That sucker is not coming off unless you lot want information technology to…
However, it was a little sharper than the 7.v″ upper. But not so much that information technology bothered me…it only wasn't beveled.
I'd also rather have the entire track for such a short upper in case I wanted to run lights/lasers.
The slope of it feels skillful in hand but would make information technology kind of difficult to run a pressure pad.
In the 7.v″ upper…the cutouts were askew and felt nice in mitt.
But it didn't take any alignment ears. Nil moved since the tension screws were ok during testing…but I'd rather have something to continue information technology aligned.
I did capeesh the full track…especially on a shorter handguard/butt setup.
Taking off the handguards…you can see the differences between the seven.5″ and 10.5″ gas systems.
The 10.v″ is running a carbine length while the seven.five″ is running a pistol length.
General rule of thumb is that the longer the gas arrangement…the milder the recoil impulse and the better the reliability.
You can see them compared with a mid-length gas arrangement (my favorite for a sixteen″ barrel).
Barrels are Nitride coated which has a dainty smooth black color but isn't too shiny. PSA's nitride barrels are their eye-of-the-road barrels.
The gas blocks were attached with correct torque…they aren't coming off unless you want them besides.
BCG (bolt carrier group) and charging handle were mil-spec (military machine specification) and ran fine.
I do similar that the bolt is marked "MP" for magnetic particle inspected…and that the BCG gas key was property staked.
And in all…everything was where it should have been.
At present onto what really matters!
Shootability
I've had bad luck with AR-15 pistols…at to the lowest degree the ones my friends and I take congenital.
Something always goes wrong with the gas system.
I'm glad to say that I experience no failures with the two PSA uppers in over 500 rounds total.
Of course…the recoil was a niggling more than than a standard xvi″ barrel AR…but that was to exist expected.
Here'southward the x.5″ in activity with a standard A2 wink hider.
Not bad at all.
It got a little hairier with the 7.v″ upper. Check out the increased recoil and gases coming out.
But still not unpleasant to shoot if you take a decent brace like the SB Tactical SBA3.

Accuracy
Time to see if a shorter barrel equals less accuracy…
I used a variation of my standard testing rig:
- Lead Sled DFT ($200)
- Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x Scopewith Larue Mount($3500)
- AGL Deed Trigger ($75)
Information technology was pretty hilarious to mount my precision telescopic on the 7.v″ AR pistol…
After nigh 200 rounds through each upper with no cleaning or suspension-in…I set 100 yard targets.
I shot at a brisk pace of one shot every 3-5 seconds or then…whenever I got my sights back on target. I let the barrel residuum virtually v minutes between each new load.
Here's the seven.5″ pistol upper:
The Wolf Gold (cheapest plinking round) was all over the place…probable ten MOA (1 minute of bending = roughly 1 inch at 100 yards).
PMC fared the best in terms of affordable rounds with around 4 MOA and American Eagle was a trivial worse at ~half dozen MOA.
Match ammo Federal Gold Medal did the best with around 2-3 MOA.
Allow's see how adding 3″ to the barrel does…
A LOT more consistent…the plinking rounds of Wolf, PMC, and American Eagle all scored around 4 MOA…which is military specification for the longer 14.five″ M4.
And the friction match ammo was a solid two MOA.
Good for human sized targets up to 300 yards which is more than acceptable for an AR pistol. Check out All-time AR-15 Ammo for my go-to choices for self-defence and plinking rounds.
Recommended Models
For me…I liked shooting the 10.v″ a lot more. If you lot value a improve shooting experience and probably more reliability…opt for that.

Just, if you're new to PSA…my normal advice and the best selection is to carve up upwardly the upper and lower so you don't pay a complete firearm tax.
Over again, I like the SBA3 Brace and would probably get the MOE pistol grip and EPT trigger (PSA's decently well-baked mil-spec version).

Prices get from $259 for shorter barrels to $369 for 10.5″ versions. I'd opt to include BCG (commodities carrier group) and CH (charging handle) unless you already take those.
Most volition come up with flip-up sights and the option of flash hider or fluted flash can (which projects noise/gas forward…good for clearing rooms but will create a fireball at night).
I like the flash hider choice.

Recommended Upgrades
An AR-15 pistol is basically an AR-15. So the standard Best AR-fifteen Upgrades employ.
Except don't add a traditional vertical grip since it moves information technology from pistol to AOW (whatsoever other weapon) category.
My communication is to go a hand-cease since if you usually shooter longer guns…y'all might straighten out your arm.
Non the end of the globe if you have a 16″+ gun. Merely finger-losing-bad in a short barreled gun.
My go-to is the Magpul Handstop that you lot tin install complete or only the larger section. Both ways shown higher up in the starting time and final upper.

By The Numbers
Reliability: v/5
500 rounds with 4 dissimilar types of ammo and 3 different mag brands…no malfunctions. Which is saying something for a brusk gas system AR pistol!
Accuracy: 4/five
Merely OK if we're comparing with 16″ variants…but great for 7.v″ and 10.5″ inches. Y'all're going to be fine hitting torso-sized targets out to 300 yards.
Ergonomics: 4/v
Handguards come in a couple dissimilar styles depending on what PSA has in stock. Simply they all practise their job.
Looks: 4/5
Coloring matches up for both my uppers and I like the Nitride barrel compared to Phosphate (bumpy and irksome).
Customization: v/v
It's an AR…and all the handguards are Chiliad-LOK then you can practise most anything (no vertical grips unless y'all're applying for an AOW). Trigger if you become the EPT is decent for a reliable mil-spec and the SBA3 brace is comfy. Opt for an optic (Best AR-xv Optics) to wring out all the accuracy.
Blindside for the Buck: v/5
Swell deal if you build from the kit…but even if you do the complete upper and lower…you're getting an AR-xv pistol for ~$500.
Overall Rating: four.5/5
Decision
In that location you have it…quite possibly the well-nigh affordable (and reliable) choice to start into the world of AR-15 pistols.
I recommend getting the complete upper in x.5″ for meliorate recoil management and reliability…plus the flash hider unless you lot're working with teammates in close quarters.
